II International Congress on
“University education: The millennium heritage, problems, perspectives”

1st Information Letter

Minsk, Republic of Belarus,
14-16 May 2008

1. Introduction

II International Congress “University Education: the Millennium Heritage, Problems, Perspectives” (the Congress) will take place in Minsk, Belarus, from 14th to 16th May, 2008. It will be held in Minsk State Linguistic University (MSLU) which possesses wide experience in hosting the participants of large scale international meetings and is well-known by its traditions in scientific research, innovations and many-sided cooperation with universities in Belarus, CIS countries and far abroad.

2. Objectives

The overall objectives/outcomes of the Congress are: to identify and explore problem areas of university education development, to clarify the questions of increasing its quality and competitiveness, to inform about innovations and modern educational technologies used in higher education, to facilitate partnership between universities and to elaborate strategies for cooperation of university research with academic and industrial science.

3. Content

The Congress is planning to address a number of themes which, however, are focused on the following:

1. Modern strategies of university education in CIS countries, its integration into the European and world educational process.
2. The genesis of university education: historic and methodological aspects. Problems and perspectives of classical, technical and professional university education.
3. Quality increase in university education. Introduction of new methods and technologies. Working out and realization of modern educational standards. Teacher-training for different types of universities.
4. University scientific research and its cooperation with academic and industrial science. Innovations in combining learning and research work of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Introduction of research results into the learning process.
5. Development of university administration and management. The creation of effective university infrastructure.

4. Methodology

The Congress will include plenary sessions and section discussions, a round table, a “pedagogical sitting- room”, a “technical creativeness studio”, workshops with prominent scientists. The participants will meet the teaching staff of leading universities in Minsk and see the sights of the city.

5. Participants

To enlist in the Congress program it is necessary to apply to the organizing committee and to send abstracts of the report. The deadline for submitting applications and abstracts is 15 February 2008.

Applications and report abstracts can be submitted in a paper variant (with addition of their electronic version) to: Organizing Committee of the Congress - 2008, Minsk State Linguistic University (MSLU), 21 Zakharov str., Minsk, 220034, Belarus.

Information letter № 2 inviting the participants enlisted in the Congress program and informing about the conditions, proceedings and other necessary items will be sent till 10 April 2008.

Expenses connected with running the Congress will be undertaken by its organizers. Travel allowance for the participants from Belarus is to be paid by their sending institutions. The Congress participants from CIS countries and far abroad are to pay their travel expenses, while accommodation and board will be provided by the Congress organizers.

6. Abstract Submission

The working languages of the Congress are Russian and Belarusian. Reports in English will be translated. The organizing committee is planning to publish the collection of abstracts chosen for the Congress participation prior to the Congress.

Abstracts (no more than 2 pages A4) and reports (no more than 8 pages A4) can be presented in Russian, Belarusian or English. The same author can participate no more than in 2 reports.

Тhe texts must be printed in Times New Roman, 12 pt, Word 6,0 in 1 interval with 3,0 sм – left, 2,5 – right, top and bottom.

The materials which are presented avoiding the requirements may not be published and they are not sent back. The abstracts will be published without editing.

The reports enlisted in the program should be presented in two versions (electronic and paper ones) to the organizing committee at the time of registration. Some reports of the Congress participants chosen by the organizing committee will be published in a special collection after the Congress.
